What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition in which male breast tissue swells due to hormones. While this most commonly occurs during puberty, it can also occur due to aging, medications, and health conditions. Not only can male breast reduction improve a man’s physique, it can also boost their self-confidence.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Healthy males who are non-smokers at a relatively normal weight can often benefit from this procedure. It is important that patient’s breasts have fully developed before undergoing male breast reduction. A consultation with either board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Sherick or with board-eligible plastic surgeon Dr. Amy Strong, who holds a dual MD-PhD doctorate, can help to determine whether this procedure is right for you. In some cases, our plastic surgeons may recommend being evaluated by an endocrinologist first to identify any possible causes of a hormone imbalance, which can cause gynecomastia.

Procedure Description

Depending on the type of breast tissue present, excess breast tissue or fat can be removed with liposuction, excision or a combination of both. If excess tissue is mostly made up of fatty tissue and there is sufficient skin elasticity, liposuction alone may be used. Glandular tissue and skin will be removed if necessary. More severe cases of gynecomastia may cause the areolae to stretch, in which case the size and position of the areolae can be improved. A typical incision is made either on the edge of the areola or in the armpit area. The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation.
